Maddie
I stumbled after Atticus forcibly drank my blood, still reeling with everything that had happened. Cole might be dead. I might have killed him. And Atticus made me some type of living monster.
He was a demon. A demon! How could I have been so stupid to make a deal with a demon?
Still swooning from the blood loss, I took wobbly steps through his painting studio, desperate to get out of there. The eyes of the portraits on the walls seemed to follow me.
"I'm not the only one, right?" I gestured at the paintings. "These are other people you’ve lied to."
"Call it what you will.” Atticus lifted a shoulder an inch as if it didn’t matter. “I made an offer. You accepted."
"Without knowing the true cost!" I spat.
"Don't be naïve,” he dismissed. “Nothing is free. Everything has a price."
"But you lied.” I pointed at him. “You. Lied.”
“Enough,” he said in a clipped voice and motioned to the door. “You can leave.”
That was my goal. But since I never wanted to return to this vile nightmare, I had to get answers. I returned my attention back to the portraits. “Did they all ask to be beautiful?"
"No. Only the most superficial." He snorted.
When I turned back to him, he gave me a pointed look.
I didn’t need his judgement and scowled. "Did they pay the same cost as me?"
“They had to make a choice. Just like you."
I closed my eyes and exhaled. "Does that mean they all suffer from this unbearable craving?”
